My art and research practice is concerned with the lives of animals, the relation of the human to the non-human, and the reductive representation of animal beings. The tendency of the human to express the self through the allegorical vehicle of the animal (animal-autobiography)[i] is measured and disarticulated in this visual body of work including oil paintings, textiles and ceramics.

Philosophically and materially animals have long been the most estranged and disempowered creatures on earth — the Aristotelian and Cartesian theses have proposed animals as little more than automata.[ii] This derisive philosophy has embedded itself in cultural practices, language and [un]consciousness; erasing the agency of non-human beings. Artworks featured on this exhibition address this human/animal dialectic.
